(Review date: February 2009)

Situated in the shadow of a giant wind turbine on a business park on the outskirts of Reading, Lsq2’s location does not initially make the heart beat faster.

But as soon as you enter this minimalist brasserie things start to improve - and from then on they only get better.

As you start to read the menu you feel your taste buds being stimulated by dish after dish of tempting ‘modern British with a twist’ concoctions. On it you will find the occasional safe option, but most of the offerings will interest the more adventurous diner, with unusual takes on traditional ingredients.

To start we chose beef carpaccio, sashimi tuna with spinach, tempura soft shell crab and vegetable spring rolls with a trio of dips. The beef, which was Scottish in origin, was described as ‘excellent’ by the member of our party that ate it, the sashimi tuna was generous and in its prime, the crab was coated in a light batter which was easy on the palette and seasoned to just the right level to allow the flavours of the crustacean to dominate and the spring rolls and dips were varied and full of subtle oriental flavours.

For mains we had pork belly with boudin blanc, steak, a special of the day which was monkfish with bouillabaisse and finally red snapper. Presentation-wise everything was excellent but, while the food was of a consistently high standard, perhaps a little bit more depth of flavour could have been developed in some of the dishes, although this is a minor criticism.

For pudding we chose apple crumble, a rhubarb selection, Eton mess and chocolate fondant. Again, each dish was beautifully presented and was trying to take the diner out of their comfort zone while providing palette pleasing flavours.

The service, while acceptable, did let the experience down slightly. It was rudimentary and did not match the food that was being presented. Maybe this was partly down to the fact that there was only one person working when we visited - but given that the restaurant was less than a third full on a Friday night the economics of having more staff were simply not viable.

The bill, including sides, wine and coffee comes out at about £50 a head if ordering from the a la carte selection. There are cheaper options available, including a relatively inexpensive brasserie style lunch menu.

It’s a shame that Lsq2 is not located in Reading central as it is always going to suffer from its location during the evening. If were to move to the town it would easily be the best restaurant Reading has to offer and a destination for a special occasion.

Lsq2 deserves to succeed and gets top marks for effort and the standards the kitchen adheres to. If it were to continue on the path it is going, it could easily start to poke at a top accolade and, while not Michelin level just yet, there is potential for it to be somewhere really special.
