Zero Degrees is an unusual hybrid drinking and dining venue which combines an on-site micro brewery with modern European cuisine served in the restaurant.
The Reading branch of the four-venue chain spans Gun Street and Bridge Street, with the bar entrance in the latter.
The venue has an industrial feel to it with plenty of exposed aluminium piping and of course the brewing vats themselves which are located directly behind the bar.
The ales and beers on offer are all brewed on site and range from pale ale to wheat beers of varying strengths. There are also wines and spirits on available.
To the uninitiated the ales and beers may seem like an acquired taste and will not appeal to everyone. For example, a wheat ale on offer was served with a slice of orange bobbing on the surface and was a similar consistency to a glass of orange squash.
However, the space and the relaxed atmosphere make this a comfortable and unusual place to spend a few hours either just drinking or eating as well.
The menu is diverse, although heavily influenced by France and Italy. There are plenty of pizzas and pastas on offer and six different variants of moules mariniere.
The crowd is varied during the day but tends to become dominated by students in the evening - surprising given that the drinks are not that cheap and there are no standard lagers on offer.
An interesting choice if you want to move away from the glut of chain bars that dominate Reading town centre.
