The French House is a diminutive bar/restaurant in Dean Street which is cramped but friendly and worth going out of your way for because of its colourful history.

The bar has long been a popular haunt for writers and artists and it retains a certain avant garde feel to it - you can almost imagine bearded revolutionaries plotting their next move within its walls.

However, it can be very touristy during the day, which diminishes the mystique to a certain extent. But as dusk begins to descend the day trippers disappear with the sunlight and the French House takes on a more intimate and somewhat Bohemian hue.

Upstairs is a dining area which serves a French-influenced menu of imaginative yet crowd pleasing dishes, although the prices are certainly on the expensive side for what’s on offer - maybe as a nod to keeping this section of the venue on the exclusive side.

The bar is a mobile phone-free zone - excellent - and you can only buy beer from the limited selection by the half pint which is an intelligent move and ensures the places is blissfully lager lout free.

As a place to go to with a rich history and an unusual yet totally endearing atmosphere, The French House is highly recommended.
