This place is a real hidden gem in Reading and offers something completely different in terms of eating out.

Hidden behind its diminutive exterior and past its sales counter is a bar and restaurant offering top quality real ale and pies.

On the day of our visit the pies we chose were steak and ale and wild boar and venison. These were accompanied by coleslaw and boiled potatoes and a bottle of wine.

The pies were excellent - moist but with a crunch to the pastry, and packed with meat and rich gravy. If there was one minor criticism it would be that the boar and venison pie was ever so slightly over salted, but delicious all the same.

The side dishes were fine, as was the wine, which was dry and easy to drink, although perhaps not the best choice for meat pies.

The only other minor criticism is that the main restaurant area at the back is slightly over lit, but if you’re lucky you can grab a booth by the bar where it’s not quite as bright.

All the staff were very friendly and welcoming and the place had an almost rustic charm to it which made you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Sweeny and Todd really is a unique place for the area and is an absolute must if you enjoy a pie. You can also buy the pies from the front counter to take home which is an extra bonus.

Our bill came to around £28 (the wine we chose was £14) which is good value for money given the quality of the food.

This place is quirky, original, welcoming and wonderful and somewhere that you can return to time and time again.
