Summary:

Source Sligo in John Street features a large open-plan restaurant, a wine bar and a state of the art cookery school on the site. The philosophy behind the venue, according to the owners Ray and Eileen Monahan, is to produce "locally-sourced quality food in a cosmopolitan atmosphere". The interior, they say, "reflects this ethos by combining elegance with a home-grown retro feel".

Review: June 2011

We ate out in Source last night, and I am still trying to climb out of my pit of disappointment today.

It was fine dining at it's most cutting edge, only without the fine, and the only cutting was cutting the edge of a tiny piece of trout and charging me 8 euros for it. Grim.

I had trout with squid for starters: the squid was four battered rings that in terms of size were equivalent to one frozen Tesco calamari ring sliced into four smaller rings.

The trout was four small slices of trout, each approximately 3cm x 1cm and 2mm deep. Ok, so I was thinking small but perhaps a culinary delight, but when it was tasteless and I was served by waiters in jeans, untucked shirts and butcher’s aprons it just didn’t work.

For main I had steak, which definitely wasn't terrible. But it definitely was average. It came with potato confit and pureed rocket, the second of which was a welcome change to the abundance of overpriced salad leaves already weighing the table down - purée them, good thinking!

The desserts in fairness looked tasty and by far the best of three courses, but by that stage we were fed up, yet underfed, and just wanted to leave - a friend dining with us matched the desserts’ nice presentation with their taste when he got the actual dessert he ordered on the third attempt.

All in all I wouldn’t go back, and in today’s climate I have no idea how this works for anyone. Still hungry after two courses, no drinks, and 30 euros later is just poor.
