There's a lot to like about Scotts - its opulent yet buzzing dining room, the truly excellent quality of the fish served and the prestigious Mayfair location.

However, for a venue of its calibre (it now belongs to the same stable as The Ivy and Caprice to name but a few) there are a few niggles which shouldn't factor with a restaurant of this standard, reputation and pedigree. Nor the cost.

The highly polished waiters ooze professionalism but it appeared that some of them believed serving mere mortals is a tad beneath them so an affected mental and physical aloofness was the order of the day during service - silly and pointless.

The accompaniments to our various fish dishes on the day where poor. For example, a beautiful piece of Cornish hake sat uncomfortably on top of a smattering of Castilian potatoes, some of which were cooked, while others were still hard, in a rather bland sauce resembling Ragu.

Our half a dozen oysters to start were exceptional in their freshness and taste, but somewhat irritating in their vastly differing size.

And our side order of buttered spinach again proved a disappointment - it was slightly soggy and under seasoned and any half decent home cook could have knocked up a more respectable offering in seconds.

Despite these criticisms, the quality of fish truly is exceptional. In addition to the hake, our party had octopus carpaccio, mackerel fillet, red tiger prawns, smoked haddock with a poached egg, and a cod fillet. All were superb and cooked to perfection.

It’s worth noting that aside from the restaurant proper, there is an accompanying oyster bar, and a large outside seating area, although this tends to fill up quickly if the weather is good.

Scotts is close to being memorable - it creates an exciting atmosphere in a beautifully designed space, but it's the small details which let it down. It has got the fish right, now a little bit more attention to the others aspects of the operation is needed to make it a formidable destination.
