Bracknell is not commonly known for being a culinary destination, but Rowans restaurant at the Coppid Beech Hotel is intent on reversing this negative image with a new chef and a new menu.
Hotel restaurants are always going to have a battle on their hands for non-residential trade, and the dated, overly lit style and décor of Rowans does nothing to help its cause, not to mention the price.
But the food is actually quite good and is made from fresh, UK-sourced produce.
An example menu is: starter - gourmet platter £12.50 (Foie gras, smoked salmon, duck pate, marinated mushrooms, roasted peppers, crayfish and wild rocket dressed in truffle oil); Main - roasted fillet of Welsh lamb with crisp Parma ham, pea mash and onion rings on a summer mint jus £26; Pudding - exotic fruit platter with passion fruit sorbet £6.50.
The gourmet platter was a bit of a let down, with only the foie gras tasting of anything much at all, the lamb was delicious and perfectly pink, and the pudding was subtle, light and full of fresh flavours.
Despite being staggeringly overpriced and the disappointing starter, the rest of the meal was extremely enjoyable and offered something not often found in the Bracknell/Wokingham areas.
The restaurant desperately needs updating, but with a bit of work this could become a popular destination for a quality meal out. Would have got an extra half star if the food had been more value for money.
