I’ve just returned from a friend’s wedding at the very upmarket Phylis Court Hotel in Henley-on-Thames. A beautiful place.

We also drank and ate at the Hotel du Vin in Henley on the Friday night. Another really nice and very upscale place.

However, this review is for the place we stayed at, the Rose and Crown pub which is close to both of the posher neighbours on New Street in Henley. What a great place.

Too small really but extremely homely and welcoming, this pub is run by a young couple who bend over backwards to be accommodating and to put you at ease.

Nothing was too much trouble with the highlight of the trip being the food. This lad can really cook.

We ate on arrival on Friday and the lunch we had was spectacular. Best belly pork with crackling I've ever eaten and the scallop starter was gorgeous.

The breakfast each morning of our two-day stay was amongst the best I've eaten, also with everything so very fresh and obviously locally sourced and not supermarket packaged.

By the way, I'm a builder and know a good full English when I eat one!

The food in the other two hotels we at was good in its own right. The difference was in the costs as well as the quality. Lunch at the Rose and Crown was buttons in comparison and was easily the best of the three.

Didn't drink a huge amount at the rose but were welcomed back late each evening by Craig and Rebecca who would treat you to a late drink before bed which must have been a strain for her as she is currently heavily pregnant.

They were really nice and friendly people and if you are considering staying in the area you should give this place some thought.

If we ever return to Henley we wouldn’t consider anywhere else.
