"I dropped into the Little Chef on Thursday morning and have to say was pretty disappointed by the experience. We were greeted by a horde of friendly staff who were extremely efficient, but when it came to what we were actually served, Little Chef fell well short. All we ordered was coffee and toast - not hard to get right for anyone. But the bread was stale and under toasted, the coffee was of the diluted instant variety and a very meager amount of butter accompanied our order. Not good - if they can't get this right then it doesn't bode well."

Everyone has been talking about Little Chef since Heston Blumenthal, the celebrity chef/mad scientist, helped revamp this branch of the ailing chain.

Those who saw the show will no doubt have felt great sympathy for the kitchen genius, whose Fat Duck restaurant in Bray has been named best restaurant in the world in the past and has three Michelin stars, as he battled with bureaucratic fat cats at Little Chef HQ.

It is surprising considering the efforts he went to and his popularity in the foodie world that his name is not shouted from the rooftops at Popham Services. His hand in the revamp is not even mentioned on the menu.

The Heston snubbing aside, the new branch looks pretty great, with nostalgic pictures on the walls, a bright red theme to banish the restaurant’s former dingy appearance and blue sky on the ceiling (perhaps the fat cats wanted to be remind Heston of their demand for “blue sky thinking”?).

The menu is great, although the starters list could be a little more varied than the garlic bread and mushroom soup available.

I ate the coq au vin (£8.95) which was absolutely delicious, a really good value meal. The chicken was well cooked and the sauce beautifully rich. My only criticism would be the mashed potatoes, which tasted and looked like they had been cooked in a microwave.

For dessert I had the chocolate truffle slice (£3.75), which has passion fruit puree running through the centre, transforming it from a simple chocolate pud to something really exciting.

The bill comes with jelly beans for all, meaning everyone leaves with a smile.

Before leaving I had to check out the toilets, which were singled out for mentioning in the television program. Poetry and songs play when you trigger sensors in the cubicles and wall tiles offer tips on how to tell if eggs have gone rotten and how to season food.

A member of staff let it slip this scheme may not be rolled out across the country because of cost - I hope they reconsider as this re-launch could secure Little Chef’s future for years to come.
