Isle of Wight Garlic Festival

FROM its humble beginnings in 1983 as a minor celebration to mark the end of the garlic harvest, the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival now attracts up to 25,000 visitors annually over an August weekend.
For 21 years the event was held in the small village of Newchurch, but has now been moved to a site just outside the village near the Fighting Cocks roundabout, on the A3056 between Sandown and Newport.
The festival showcases the very best of garlic produce, both in its raw format and in an eclectic variety of culinary demonstrations.
From the normality of meat and mussels flavoured by garlic, the adventurous can venture into a more bizarre exploration of their tastebuds and plump for beer, bubblegum and even ice cream flavoured with the pungent bulb.
The event has a village fair feel to it, combined with the scale of a full-blown festival, and includes many other events, displays and live entertainment to keep visitors occupied.
The event even has its own song, not surprisingly named ‘The Garlic Song’, and is a big fundraising vehicle for local charitable organisations.
There is plenty of accommodation available nearby. More information about the festival can be found by visiting the following link.
