The ethos behind Giraffe is to offer an eclectic selection of food in a vibrant and fun atmosphere accompanied by a varied soundtrack of world music.

And it was certainly buzzing when we visited for a Sunday lunchtime feed in January, which traditionally is not the best time for trade for a restaurant of this kind.

But its close vicinity to the Oracle shopping centre puts it well and truly in the catchment area of throngs of hungry shoppers and given that two weeks of snow had only just cleared, they were out in force.

The menu at Giraffe is a complete fusion of world cuisines - from a fry up or a burger to stir fries, wraps and a Cajun jambalaya, you’ll find something to suit almost any tastes.

We were given a warm welcome on arriving and the maitre d was efficient and secured us a table after just a few minute’s wait, despite the fact the place was heaving with a varied mix of diners.

The table was on the small side for the four of us, and the chairs felt a little bit dangerous, but aside from the canteen feel of the furniture, we had plenty of air between us and nearby tables meaning we did not have to watch our P’s and Q’s.

We weren’t very imaginative with our food choices - it was burgers all round (although one was the vegetarian falafel option), accompanied by onion rings, blush wine, house white wine, coke and water.

The burgers were above average - nicely flame grilled and covered with fresh salad. They weren’t too greasy or heavy and the buns were light and went well with the meat. The chips which all the burgers came with were skin-on and again were well presented.

The side orders of onion rings were a little on the mean side and the accompanying barbecue sauce tasted as if it had come straight from the bottle, but this is only a minor criticism.

And the only other small grumble that one of our party had was that the falafel burger was literally a bun with three balls inside - rather than a flattened offering which would have made it easier to eat.

This aside, the service was swift and friendly and no pressure was put on us to rush out despite the steady stream of people queuing up to get a table.

The meal worked out at about £15 a head including service and a drink, which is a couple of quid more than it should have been, but not something that you’d fret about too much. Not the best value for money, but neither was it a rip off.

Giraffe is not the sort of place you’d go for a long and lazy lunch accompanied by a few bottles of wine, but the vibrancy and warmth of the venue makes it a cheerful choice among the plethora of similar alternatives in this part of Reading.
