“This isn’t food, it’s a theatrical experience”. This is a very common reaction to the Fat Duck, but, to be fair, an accurate one.
There has been an uncountable number of words written about The Fat Duck and it seems almost an impossible task to add to what has already been said without sounding clichéd.
Suffice it to say, this is an extraordinary place which anyone with the remotest interest in food should experience at least once.
You will have no doubt read about the bacon and egg ice cream and the “world famous” snail porridge, but there is a more to it than this.
Once your meal begins you will find yourself slipping into a surreal world where the outside world seems a very long way away.
When you’ve finished you’ll walk out into the sleepy yet extremely quaint village of Bray (also the home of three-starred Waterside) blinking and shaking your head to try to readjust to normality.
The restaurant itself is white walls and minimalist, allowing for a jovial and comfortable atmosphere where you are reasonably close to others but a long way from hearing their conversations. Staff are excellent, even if the restaurant at times seems ever so slightly overpopulated with them. Go for the tasting menu, you will not be disappointed.
The Fat Duck is less than ten minutes by taxi from Maidenhead railway station. The journey should cost you around £6.
