Chronicles is a breathe of fresh air in Reading’s teen chain bar infested drinking circuit. It is an oasis for anyone who wants to enjoy a drink without having to fight heavily tattooed chavs to get served at the bar and battle to be heard above ‘conversations’ about Jordan and Peter between hoop-earring wearing mini-skirted banshees. Hidden away down a quiet side street near the town hall, Chronicles offers a comfortable and friendly cellar bar environment where good wine and food is on offer. The staff are excellent, the lighting is low and the clientele is respectable and friendly. It is a mystery as to why this venue isn’t busier - the one thing it suffers from is a slight lack of trade and atmosphere on some nights. Wine starts at about £13 a bottle. Food is good value, fairly standard brasserie-style offerings. First choice for a glass of wine in Reading.
