Browns manages to raise the bar when it comes to chain venues of this kind with its subtly neo-colonial decor and its slightly posher than average menu.

The Cambridge Browns sticks with this tried and tested mold and creates a large, stylish space which attracts a mainly older and affluent crowd.

When we visited the venue had unfortunately made the classic 'cocktail' mistake that is commonplace at the moment in bars which are trying to cash in on the current trend.

They were allowing untrained staff, who by all accounts had never heard of the slightly pretentious title of mixologist, to make reasonably complicated and expensive cocktails.

The result is that they simply poured the component parts into a glass, threw some ice in and served it. This is not a cocktail.

A foolish and irritating move by the management in an attempt to cash in on the drinks zeitgeist and the venue would have scored higher if it wasn't for this.

Aside from this, the Cambridge venue was buzzing on the Monday night of the visit, and was a very comfortable place to spend a couple of hours in, even without food.

Recommended, but avoid paying the heavy price for an inferior drink unless you can see that the bartender knows what he's doing beforehand.
