You're always going to be running the gauntlet if you roll up for a curry in Reading town centre on a Friday night.

For many of the 15,000 or so boozy revellers descending on the town during an average weekend, the need for a curry fix is going to rear its head at some point during the evening meaning many of the curry houses are pretty rowdy.

And this was the case at Bengal Reef as the evening wore on. We arrived at 8pm when there was a mixed crowd of families and couples, but as 9.30pm rolled by the clientele started to change and we found ourselves surrounded by large groups of very drunk people.

This was fine as they all seemed pretty well behaved but it would certainly not be to everyone's tastes.

Set inside the often overlooked Kings Walk shopping parade, the first thing that strikes you about Bengal Reed is the minimal amount of effort that's gone into designing the decor. The lighting is bright, there are few authentic trimmings meaning the dining area is fundamentally empty aside from the tables and chairs.

The menu is very standard and the food is mediocre. The starters were on the small side and did not taste very fresh, while the mains, despite us choosing four very different curries, had little to distinguish them from each other.

While not unpleasant (and probably a lot nicer after a skinfull) it was all distinctly average, as was the service from the group of inert and rather miserable staff.

One anomaly worth mentioning was that when we ordered poppadoms they came with three dips but no lime pickle. We were talking about this among ourselves when a waiter overheard and barked at us in a pretty unfriendly way that we "had to order lime pickle separately in this restaurant". Great, thanks for telling us just as we'd nearly finished the poppadoms.

Perhaps we were not drunk enough to appreciate Bengal Reef, but we left firmly of the opinion that this was not a curry house to visit on a regular basis. It wasn't even that cheap either.
