Blink and you'll miss the Allied Arms - its diminutive frontage passes in a nanosecond as you walk along St Marys Butts.

Hidden inside, however, is a tiny front bar then a large three section garden, complete with parasols and heaters to keep the smokers among us happy.

The Allied Arms is steeped in history and possibly dates back as far as the 1600s, according to an interesting write up on the pub's extensive and up-to-date website.

You feel welcome as soon as you enter the Allied Arms, despite a cliquey crowd at the bar who stopped and stared for a second or two when we entered.

But the staff made up for this with an easy and friendly manner. And you'll also be impressed by the range of beers on offer - standard lagers of course, but also several interesting and unusual guest beers were available on the day of our visit.

The garden area is a hidden oasis in Reading - with plentiful seating across a three tier area which easily quadruples the size of the pub.

The crowd was mainly older, but everyone was relaxed and friendly and there was no edge or attitude to be seen or heard.

Recommended for a visit, especially on a summer’s day to take full advantage of the garden.
